Understanding respiratory
India has over 37 million people living with asthma, plus millions more with post-COVID breathlessness, allergic rhinitis, and chronic bronchitis. Respiratory conditions respond remarkably well to pranayama and yoga therapy, which address the mechanical, immunological, and autonomic nervous system aspects of breathing — not just the symptom of breathlessness in isolation.
A comprehensive meta-analysis found that yoga significantly improved quality of life in asthma patients across 5 studies with 375 participants. In a clinical trial in Northern India with 300 participants, the yoga group showed a mean improvement of 10 L/min in peak expiratory flow rate versus 2 L/min in the control group — a statistically significant, clinically meaningful difference.
“Yoga improves quality of life in people with asthma across multiple studies. Most subjects in yoga groups demonstrated a decreased number of day and night attacks compared to controls. Mean peak expiratory flow rate improved 10 L/min in the yoga group versus 2 L/min in controls (statistically significant).”
