Understanding thyroid
Thyroid disorders affect 42 million Indians — with hypothyroidism at 11% prevalence, far above global averages. Women are six times more likely than men to develop thyroid dysfunction. Most are placed on lifelong hormone replacement therapy, with no intervention addressing root causes: chronic stress, nutritional deficiencies (iodine, selenium, zinc), poor sleep, and environmental toxin exposure.
A 2024 randomised controlled trial in the International Journal of Yoga found that 8 weeks of standardised yoga asanas as add-on therapy significantly reduced serum TSH, oxidative stress markers, and interleukin-6 (a key inflammatory driver) in hypothyroid patients. Our thyroid service combines targeted asanas that stimulate the thyroid and parathyroid glands with pranayama for metabolic regulation and Ayurvedic nutritional adjustments.
“Yoga effectively improves thyroid profile, lipid profile, heart rate variability, pulmonary functions, anxiety, depression, and quality of life among hypothyroidism patients. Yoga may be an inexpensive add-on preventive and therapeutic option for hypothyroidism.”
